The images show examples of two Christie Stud Removal Tools: This is the easy way to remove threaded studs safely and without causing damage. In the pnuematic version, the reaction arm fits onto an opposing stud to give a secure reaction, avoiding damage to the casing and helping to give a safe process compared to conventional methods. As the specialized socket begins to rotate the internal mechanism locks the socket onto the stud, applying equal force. The Christie Stud Removal Tool overcomes these issues by avoiding side-loading effects and reducing stud torsion.

At this stage the use of extra force is also likely to damage the casing. The ensuing friction then results in damage which prevents the stud from being easily removed. The threaded surfaces frequently bind against each other as a result of the application of unequal forces and the side-loading effects.

In either case damage to the casing can occur, especially when resorting to the use of hammers and manual wrenches without specialized sockets. Typical techniques involve using a double nut or by welding a nut onto the stud. Conventional means of removing threaded studs can be time-consuming and costly.
